Sankofa is a word from the language of the Akan people of Ghana that literally means “return and fetch it.” The Akan symbol for Sankofa is a bird with its head turned backward. When used in the context of history, it means that if we know and understand our past, knowledge will strengthen us and guide us on the right path as we move toward the future.
